■ SO HOW DOES THIS WORK?
BSSM Battle is an elimination icon contest. If you know what a LIMS is, you'll be familiar with this concept. However, BSSM Battle is run tournament-style with competitors playing through their matches under the identity of a Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon character. [ex.]
BSSM Battle takes 12 players and divides them into two groups of 6. These players compete against one another in their own groups for three rounds, until the emerging champion from the two sides go head-to-head to determine the overall victor. Groups are formed according to points earned during the Preliminary match.
■ WHAT ARE PRELIMINARIES?
Preliminary matches decide which 12 players may participate in Battle. They are the icon contests held prior to every Battle. All community members may submit an icon. During voting members cast a ballot, choosing 10 icons whose they believe should move on to Battle. The top 12 icons with the most points collected from voting will then be able to participate further.
■ SO I GET TO PLAY AS A SAILORMOON CHARACTER?
When submitting to the Prelimary match, each person may include their top three choices for which character they'd like to play through the Battle. During the preliminary and every round of the Battle they will be known as that character. Character icons are used on Battle Maps and during challenge posts to enforce this identity. [ex.]
While it is fun to "play" a character, it also serves as a form of anonymity so that voting may occur in a fair and objective manner. At the time of their elimination each player's identity will be revealed.
If you do not want to choose a character or omit that portion of submitting, one will be chosen for you.
■ DO I HAVE TO PLAY THE SAME CHARACTER EVERY TIME?
No. After each Battle all characters are relieved of their players and everyone may choose a different character. You may choose to play the same character again (if it is not taken by someone else by that time).
■ HOW ARE GROUPS FORMED?
During the preliminary match, members vote for their top 10. Each vote is worth 1 full point. The 12 icons that have accumulated the most points are allowed to participate in Battle. All other participants must wait until the next preliminary match and try again. The 12 players are split up into pairs based on a pre-determined system.
■ HOW DOES THE "BATTLE SYSTEM" WORK?
Icon makers are eliminated by the tournament system; both groups are paired off in twos according to their skill level (determined by their point value in the preliminary match) and members vote between them. The survivors move on to compete against each other, and the members vote again. This continues until one icon-maker from each group is left and they go head-to-head in a Final Match to determine the overall champion.
Round 1: Players are paired off and compete with each other one-on-one. The players with the most vote-offs is eliminated. The winner of each match advances to Round 2.
Round 2: The three players of each group compete against themselves. The players with the most vote-offs is eliminated. The remaining two players move on to Round 3.
Round 3: The two players in each group face each other one-on-one. The players with the most vote-offs is eliminated. The winner of each match advances to the Final Round.
Round 4: The two finalists compete against each other one-on-one. The winner of this round wins the Battle.
When players are paired up to fight, they will be assigned a challenge. Pairs of players may end up with the same challenge or different challenges. Challenges will primarily consist of technical requirements, provided images, etc. Challenges may included restrictions about what is not allowed in the icon. The difficulty of challenges increase as the Rounds progress.
■ HOW DO I WIN?
First pass the Preliminary match. Then survive for three rounds and the Final Match to win!
■ WHAT DO I WIN?
Did you read that twice? :P Yes, there is stuff to win! At the end of every Battle there is a choice between an LJ Gift Certificate or an animanga-related prize to be snail-mailed to you. Prizes are not brand new but in good to excellent condition. If you're interested in donating prizes for the community's use, visit the Donation Box.
Winners do not have to take a prize; they may choose not to. Runner-ups also receiver a consolation prize.
LJ Gift Certificates/Services cannot be traded for cash value.
■ HOW DO I GET ELIMINATED?
If your icon does not obtain enough votes to qualify you for the top 12 in the Preliminary Match, then you are eliminated and must wait for the next Preliminary Match to try again.
For icons in Battle, members vote for the least successful (or worst) in each set. Thus the icon with the most vote-offs is eliminated.
■ MAY I REQUEST MY USERNAME NOT BE REVEALED IF I'M ELIMINATED?
No, all identities are revealed upon every elimination (if you are one of the 12 players in a Battle). If you feel that you cannot handle it, then please do not participate. Our members are all professional in manners--if you are worried about ridicule, our community has rules to protect you. To date, there has never been a problem.
■ HOW LONG IS A BATTLE?
The Preliminary match takes one week: five days to submit and two days to vote. There are four Rounds, lasting a week each: six days to submit and one to vote. In total, it takes five weeks to fully participate in a single Battle.
■ CAN I USE ANIME/LIVE ACTION SAILORMOON/COSPLAY?
No, this community is geared solely toward the original artwork of Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon. You may use black and white manga or colored manga only.
■ CAN I USE DOUJINSHI/FANART?
No, this community focuses on official artwork drawn by Naoko. The only exception may be doujinshi officially approved by Naoko and published in Sailor Moon Original Picture Collection Volume Infinity. Wait for challenges that assign this particular doujinshi before using it.
■ CAN I CHANGE MY ICON SUBMISSION BEFORE VOTING?
Yes. You can resubmit any time before voting goes up. If resubmitting requires a new post, please delete the old one. If voting goes up before you resubmit, your last-to-be-submitted icon will be used. If there isn't one then you may be eliminated.
■ CAN I MAKE ANIMATED ICONS?
Unless a challenge specifies that animation is to be used, you may not use animation in your icon submissions.
■ WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T TURN IN AN ICON?
If you fail to submit an icon you are eliminated. If the round is currently one-on-one, the win is defaulted to the other player.
If players fail to submit during the first challenge, then a Reserve Player will be brought in to replace them.
■ WHAT ARE "RESERVE PLAYERS"?
Reserve Players are a precaution, should an icon-maker make it into Battle but then doesn't participate. RPs are the first six runner ups in the Preliminary match. They are announced in the Round 1 post. Reserve Players are allowed to immediately submit to Round 1. The first to submit will be the first to replace the (if any) challenger who fails to submit to the challenge, and so on in the order they submit.
Reserve Players are implemented for Round 1 only and not for any other Round.
■ AM I SUPPOSE TO MAKE/USE ICONS THAT ONLY HAVE MY CHARACTER IDENTITY IN IT?
Playing a character means having a secret identity until the end of every Battle. You are asked not to use icons when posting comments with the character you're playing as in an attempt to expose your identity to others in order to gain votes. This is a violation of our Code of Conduct.
For example, if you were Naru for Battle 15 and made every comment in the community using a Naru icon(s), that would violate our Code of Conduct because you would be heavily implying to everyone which character identity you are, thus giving your anonymity away.
It is not restricting whom you icon in challenges.
The character-labeled icons the community provides [?] is for use on Battle Maps and for challenge posts, not for the member's use.
■ CAN I CHANGE WHICH CHARACTER I AM?
You may change your mind only during preliminary submission. Once Preliminary voting goes up, you are stuck with the character you picked for the duration of that Battle.
Leave a new comment or a reply to your original submission noting that you'd like to make a character change.
■ I'M CURRENT IN THE FINAL ROUND; CAN I SUBMIT TO THE NEW BATTLE'S PRELIMINARY?
Participants involved in the current final round of a battle may submit to the next battle's preliminary; the final round and the newest preliminary submission are always run concurrently.
